Parade

In Singapore,
1,000 members and friends of the Singapore Soka Association (SSA)
took part in the National Day Parade commemorating the 35th
anniversary of the country's independence on August 9. The
event was attended by President S. R. Nathan, Prime Minister
Goh Chok Tong, cabinet ministers, foreign diplomats and
dignitaries as well as 25,000 members of the public. SSA
participated in this annual event for the 15th time since
1981, adding vigor and color to the main show display segment.
This year, the performers were almost all new members of the
SGI and their friends. The parade is televised live every
year, and this year's performers, having watched it on TV in
previous years, were excited to be participants and experience
firsthand the spirit of contributing to society.
Meanwhile, about
1,500 members of the youth division of SGI-Malaysia took part
in a Charity Culture Festival on June 16 and 17 in Shah Alam,
the capital of the state of Selangor. The culture festival,
which centered on the theme of promoting the spirit of social
contribution, was attended by a total of 25,000 people. The
funds raised were donated to 22 charities, including schools,
hospitals, health foundations and a charity for the blind.

SGI-Malaysia also
held a cultural evening promoting neighborliness and
friendship in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, on August 5. Aimed at
spreading the spirit of trust and friendship throughout the
region, the event was attended by about 4,500 performers,
guests and neighbors. Speaking at the event, Selangor's deputy
chief minister, Dr. Zainal Abidin Ahmad, stated that the Malay
word for culture literally means "beneficial
efforts," and that the spirit of the local SGI members,
in continuously promoting these values, was to be held in the
highest esteem.
