Value-Creating
Pedagogy Published in Hindi
A Hindi
translation of The System of Value-Creating Pedagogy by
Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, the first president of the Soka Gakkai,
was published on June 22. The work was translated by Ashok Lal.
India, home to a
multicultural society of more than a billion people,
recognizes 15 official languages in its constitution, and the
National Book Trust of India is working on a project to
translate all works considered to be of importance to society
into 12 of these languages. The Hindi edition of The System
of Value-Creating Pedagogy is one of the works covered by
this undertaking, and it is expected to be translated into
these 12 languages within about two years.

In this work,
Makiguchi asserts that education exists for the sake of the
people--a position that was greatly at odds with the
prevailing attitude in prewar Japan that education should
serve the needs of the government. Prominent educator Dr. A.
K. Jalauddin mentioned at the book's publication ceremony that
during the same period, Indians such as Tagore and Gandhi
experimented with revolutionary concepts in education that
were similar to Makiguchi's. He also notes that although The
System of Value-Creating Pedagogy was written more than 70
years ago, it continues to be of key importance in our
contemporary world.
