Tokyo Fuji Art
Museum
An exhibition of
the works of the celebrated Chinese artist Fang Zhaoling was
held at the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum (TFAM) in Hachioji, Tokyo,
from November 1 to December 10, 2000. The exhibition, titled
"An Ode to Earth and Life: the World of Fang Zhaoling,"
featured some 100 paintings and examples of her calligraphy.

Ms. Fang, aged 86,
studied calligraphy as a child and began painting when she was
19, learning classic Chinese techniques from great painters
such as Zhang Daqian. The accomplished Hong Kong-based artist,
who continues to paint six to eight hours a day, has won
international acclaim through her exhibitions held in China,
the U.K. and the U.S.A., but it had been nearly half a century
since her work was shown in Japan.
In October, meanwhile, part of the TFAM collection was on loan
to the Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taiwan. The collection
consists of 25,000 Western and Eastern works of
art--paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, porcelain,
photographs, lacquerware, armor and other artworks, spanning
many centuries. The TFAM collection of masterpieces of Western
art is one of the finest in Japan, offering a 500-year
overview from the Renaissance to the Modern period, and it was
from this collection that the Taiwan exhibition was created.
The exhibition consisted of 70 representative works of
European art from the Renaissance to the present day.

The Taiwan
exhibition was the latest in a series of overseas exhibitions
organized by the museum since its founding in November 1983.
These have featured TFAM's collections of traditional Japanese
art, Western oil paintings and Chinese porcelain. As of the
year 2000, TFAM had exchanged art collections with 23
countries and regions, and nearly 300 different exhibitions
had been presented both in Japan and internationally. In 1991,
the museum received an official commendation from the Japanese
Ministry of Foreign Affairs in recognition of its outstanding
contribution to culture and the arts. TFAM is dedicated to
expanding an appreciation of our shared humanity by serving as
a "crossroads of global arts and cultures," and in
this way helping lay the foundation for world peace.
In the words of TFAM's founder, Daisaku Ikeda, "Until the
peoples of the world develop a mutual understanding and
respect for each other, there is no way we can expect to
achieve a peaceful world. It is the creation of art and music
coming from the depths of our lives that expresses the rich
spirit of a people or an age, and it is that which
communicates itself directly to the hearts of everyone. . . .
I sincerely hope that the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum will continue
to offer new joy and enrichment to the hearts of the many
people who visit it, and that it will thus become an 'oasis of
the soul.'"
