City Cleaning in Hamburg

SGI members in Germany (SGI-D) have been participating in an initiative led by the City Recycling Center in Hamburg in which young people help clean up the city. Through involvement in this activity, SGI-D Hamburg members became aware of the situation in the Schanzenpark, a park where many drug addicts spend their time. Litter in the park includes dangerous items such as used needles which pose a threat to the many children who play there.

In order to protect the children from getting hurt or infected, the local SGI-D members, in cooperation with the City Recycling Center, have instituted a new initiative concentrated on cleaning this particular area. Two hundred and fifty SGI-D Hamburg members have taken part in this activity that has resulted in the park being intensively cleaned four times per year since 1999.
