A volume of case
studies on the "Makiguchi Project," practical
applications of the educational theories of the Soka Gakkai's
founding president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, has been compiled by
the youth of SGI-Brazil. The published work, entitled "Makiguchi's
Practical Pedagogy--Education for Peace," introduces
pedagogical concepts and their implementation. Since it was
launched in 1994, the Makiguchi Project has been implemented
in 60 schools. The program, which uses arts, crafts and
gardening to cultivate students' creativity, has been
described as a process of liberation from the overemphasis on
rote learning that has afflicted the Brazilian education
system. Teachers who have used it have expressed their hope
that it will be implemented more widely in the future.

Meanwhile,
Makiguchi's "Education for Creative Living" has been
published in Italian by La Nuova Italia. This is the seventh
translated edition of this seminal work originally published
in Japanese in 1930. At the book release party in Milan, Dr.
Massimiliano Tarozzi of Bologna University introduced SGI
President Ikeda's recent call for a paradigm shift from
looking at "education for society's sake" to
"building a society serving the essential needs of
education."
A
Bulgarian-language version of "The Lion's Heart," a
record of the dialogue between Bulgarian art historian Dr.
Axinia Djourova of Sofia University and Daisaku Ikeda, was
published in April, and launched in the city of Samokov. The
book has been hailed as one of the first works to build a
bridge of understanding between the cultures of Japan and
Bulgaria. On May 24, "The Lion's Heart" was named
best book of the year in a Bulgarian national competition.
