SGI-Peru
was presented with a letter of appreciation on August 9 from
Chief Juan Luis Podesta Llosa of the National Civil Defense
Institute (INDECI) of Peru for the SGI's relief efforts during
the disastrous earthquake that hit southern Peru in late June.
INDECI, which served as the headquarters for relief
operations, says that the earthquake killed 83 people and
injured more than 2,800. According to the institute,
approximately 217,000 people have been affected, most of whom
were left without shelter.
Following the quake, SGI-Peru members donated daily
necessities such as food and clothing that were transported by
air to devastated areas. Fifty SGI-Peru volunteers also
visited and hand-delivered emergency supplies to about 6,000
families.
Meanwhile, SGI-Taiwan donated TWD 1 million (approximately US
$28,950) to the Taiwan Interior Ministry on August 1 in
response to the devastation caused by Typhoon Toraji. The
typhoon hit the country shortly after midnight on July 30,
causing massive landslides and flooding that killed 86 people
and left about 130 missing. SGI-Taiwan also conducted
emergency relief activities with youth members taking the
lead.
