Soka University of
America (SUA), Aliso Viejo, was one of five organizations
chosen to receive the "Business of the Year Award,
2002" by the South Orange County Chamber of Commerce (SCC).
The Aliso Viejo Chamber of Commerce (AVCC) recommended SUA for
the award.
Since its campus opened in Aliso Viejo in 2001, SUA students
and staff have actively contributed to the local community.
SUA students have volunteered their time at nearby elementary
schools, and they are planning research projects that support
local environmental conservation efforts in Aliso Viejo. The
university also organizes regular lectures and concerts for
local residents, and the SUA campus serves as a venue for many
local cultural and business events such as an exhibit
sponsored by AVCC in 2001 and an international festival in May
2002.

The
Summer Festival
|
Meanwhile SGI-USA
hosted a Summer Festival at the university on July 27, the
first of its kind held at the site. More than 3,500 local
SGI-USA members and Aliso Viejo residents attended the event.
The festival was part of the organization's efforts to promote
the spirit of harmony and peace within the community. SGI-USA
groups presented songs and dances in addition to an exhibit
and forum titled "Dialogue Café" which initiated
meaningful communication among the participants.
The SUA Calabasas campus hosted the 20th Summer Solstice Folk
Music, Dance and Storytelling Festival from June 21-23. Some
6,000 people attended the three-day event--said to be the
largest traditional music and arts festival on the West
Coast--which included recitals and workshops in folk music and
dance, as well as storytelling by more than 100 traditional
artists.
