Public Lectures in France

Prof. Ghaleb Benckeikh speaking about Islam

On April 25, SGI-France sponsored a public lecture titled "What Is Islam?" by Ghaleb Bencheikh, vice-president of the World Conference of Religions for Peace, a coalition of the world's major religions dedicated to achieving world peace. Professor Bencheikh explained that "jihad" in Arabic generally refers to efforts for a great purpose and does not include the concept of perpetrating armed conflict. He stressed the importance of dialogue among people of diverse cultures and religions in order to build cultures of peace.

On May 10, SGI-France sponsored a lecture on "Diversification of Religions" at the SGI European Center in Trets in southern France, featuring Prof. Etienne Bruno, director of L'Observatoire du Religieux in Aix-en-Provence, and researcher Raphaël Liogier. This lecture was part of a series on cultural issues sponsored by SGI-France.
