The
15th annual cherry tree-planting in a Denver city park |
Over the next three years, Oklahoma Chapter of SGI-USA will donate 100 trees to Del City, Oklahoma. The trees will be planted along the Sooner Road Memorial Trail, a mile-long path used for walking and biking. The city began building the trail in September 2001 in an area where more than 550 homes were destroyed by tornadoes which devastated parts of Oklahoma and Kansas in May 1999.
Local SGI-USA member Dorothy Rimbold decided to do something to improve the environment around the trail after she noticed how desolate it looked. She had heard about SGI-USA's tree-planting program and checked to see whether something could be done to improve the atmosphere of the place.
For the past 15 years, SGI-USA has planted 100 cherry trees a year along Cherry Creek in the Denver metropolitan area. The city of Denver issued a proclamation in appreciation of the local SGI-USA members' efforts to beautify their city through tree donations on April 27. The tradition of planting cherry trees dates back to 1989 when local SGI-USA members began planting them to commemorate the opening of the SGI-USA Denver Culture Center. For the past two years, SGI-USA has also donated cherry trees to Torrence, California, where 30 trees have been planted to date.
