Chemistry Olympiad

Four students from Soka High School in Kodaira, Tokyo, represented Japan at the 35th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Athens from July 6-13. The IChO is an annual international chemistry competition for high school students, and Soka High School's participation marked the first time Japan was represented at this event.

Bronze medal from the IChO

The 232 participants from 59 countries were judged for their scores in theoretical and empirical problem solving. All four of the Soka High School students received awards: Koichi Ueno and Naoto Sato won bronze medals, and Masatoshi Akahane and Ichiro Tanabe received merit awards.

Tadashi Ikegami, vice president of the Chemical Society of Japan, who accompanied the Japanese participants, stated that the most important requirement for scientists is the spirit of challenge, and he affirmed that the four young students each had a strong challenging spirit. Yukihiko Ueno, a teacher at Waseda Honjo Senior High School who served as a tutor to the four, said that in the limited time before the competition they had developed their skills and knowledge to an astonishing degree.
