A New Renaissance

A five-day conference titled "The Earth Charter in Action" took place in the walled medieval city of Urbino in Italy from June 26. A major center of artistic activity during the Renaissance, Urbino has stated its wish to be the seat of a "New Renaissance" guided by the Earth Charter.

Participants discussed practical applications of the Earth Charter in education and with local communities, and ways of using the Charter in the context of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development beginning in 2005.

Seven SGI members participated in the conference including Josiane Trolliet, an SGI-France member who started her own NGO to promote the Earth Charter; and members of the SGI from Japan, Italy, Belgium and the U.S.A.

During the conference, the SGI hosted an exhibition titled "Seeds of Change: The Earth Charter and Human Potential," which highlights the Earth Charter as a "map" pointing the way toward sustainable living.
