SGI-USA members at the citizens’ parade |
Members of SGI-USA participated in events throughout the country in January to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, spreading the message of peace and respect for life. They took part in parades and conferences commemorating the leader of the civil rights movement, who was assassinated in 1968.
“Gandhi, King and Ikeda: A Legacy of Building Peace,” a touring SGI exhibition focusing on the lives and works of King, Mahatma Gandhi and SGI President Daisaku Ikeda which was originally created by Dr. Lawrence Carter, Dean of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Chapel at Morehouse College, opened at the African American Museum and Library in Oakland, California, and at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois.
In Los Angeles, SGI-USA members performed African dances and drumming in a citizens’ parade that attracted 100,000 participants. In New York, youth division members promoted discussions and seminars on nonviolence among young people and students at local schools as part of their ongoing “Victory Over Violence” (VOV) movement, a wide-ranging program of activities to promote awareness and practice of nonviolence.
