SGI President Ikeda's Annual Peace Proposals

On January 26, SGI President Ikeda issued a peace proposal entitled "Restoring the Human Connection: The First Step to Global Peace," focusing on the accelerating threat of nuclear weapons proliferation (see article opposite). The SGI president's annual peace proposals have provided inspiration and focus for the diverse activities of SGI organizations around the world in support of peace, human rights and sustainable development.

The following list offers a synopsis of some specific proposals made by SGI President Ikeda over the last six years.

2001: The creation of a People's Fund for the UN to stabilize UN finances; the establishment of an Earth Forum where the voices of marginalized people can be heard.

2002: Various proposals for the UN's central role in responding to terrorism, such as the establishment of the International Criminal Court and the creation of a Decade of Human Rights Education for Peace; the establishment of a new UN High Commissioner for the Environment; the promotion of youth exchanges throughout Asia, and joint historical research projects for the sake of peace.

2003: A Northeast Asia Peace Conference as a solution to the question of North Korea's nuclear weapons program; a Special Session of the UN General Assembly on nuclear abolition.
