Human Rights Seminars

Children's rights seminar in Buenos Aires

The SGI-sponsored exhibition "Toward a Century of Humanity--An Overview of Human Rights in Today's World" opened in Naples, Italy, on October 18. The exhibit attracted a greater number of guests than originally expected, including Ersilia Salvato, vice chairperson of the Italian upper house, and Guido Raimondi, chairman of the European Human Rights Commission. "This exhibition expands our awareness of human rights issues and enhances the culture of dialogue required to promote them," commented Mr. Raimondi. "After viewing the exhibit, one need not be a legal expert to be thoroughly versed in human rights."

Meanwhile, in Geneva, Switzerland, a public seminar, "Toward the Century of Humanism," was held as part of SGI-Europe's youth division general meeting in October. Speakers included Alfred Fernandez on "The Political History of Human Rights," Olivier Cramer on "Legal Protection of Human Rights," and Andreas Kornevall on "The Role of Youth in Creating a Humanistic Society."

SGI-Argentina cosponsored a seminar on children's human rights at the University of Buenos Aires in October. Held in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Declaration of Children's Human Rights and the 10th anniversary of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, the seminar stressed the importance of focusing attention on children's rights in the new millennium.
