Celebrations of China's 50th Anniversary
On October 1, the People's Republic of China marked its 50th anniversary with a series of celebrations and commemorative events held throughout the country. To join in the commemoration and further promote friendship between China and Japan, the SGI participated in numerous events at the invitation of the Chinese government. In the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, local SGI members performed before an audience of 40,000 in a festival that was broadcast live throughout the territory. Youth members performing gymnastics to the accompaniment of songs by well-known singers erected a human tower crowned by the number "50." In the ancient city of Xi'an, in central China, SGI President Ikeda's "Dialogue with Nature" photo exhibition opened to great acclaim. The SGI's "Sailor's Photo Exhibition" was held in the port city of Dalian, which was also celebrating its centennial.
