Commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Treaty of Tlateloco
The SGI's "Nuclear Arms: Threat to Our World" exhibition was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City during February. The exhibition, which promotes awareness of the grave threat of nuclear weapons, was launched in 1982 and has been shown in numerous locations around the world. It is based on various studies conducted by the United Nations and features photographic panels depicting the horror of the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In addition to illustrating the medical and environmental impact of the use of nuclear weapons, the exhibition examines the economic and social benefits of disarmament.
The showing in Mexico was cosponsored by the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and SGI-Mexico. It was organized as one of a series of events commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America which was signed in Mexico on February 14, 1967, by 32 Latin American states. Also known as the Treaty of Tlatelolco, it obligates Latin American parties to refrain from acquiring nuclear weapons and from permitting the storage or deployment of nuclear weapons on their territories by other nations.
