SGI-Greece members at the Parthenon in Athens
SGI-Greece members celebrated their organization's official registration with the government of Greece as a cultural association at a newly refurbished center in Athens on July 3. SGI-Greece's fresh departure was commemorated with some 100 members gathering from all corners of the country, including Crete and other islands in the Aegean.
In a message, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda praised the members' contributions to society and asked them to look after and encourage one another while creating a harmonious organization based on friendship and trust. Dimitri Dimopoulos, general director of SGI-Greece, thanked everyone for the concerted efforts that led to the realization of their new organization. He shared his hopes for the prosperity and flourishing of the country and the people's happiness.
Following a 1967 military coup during which the Greek people were robbed of their freedoms, including the freedom of worship, Greece experienced a period of political and economic crisis. Throughout the 1970s, during those turbulent times, the pioneer members of SGI-Greece tenaciously continued to sow seeds of trust in their local communities, creating a firm foundation for today's organization.
