Xuan Tang Soka Elementary School, China

Children at the new school

A completion ceremony for Xuan Tang Soka Elementary School in Chaozhou city, Guangdong Province, China, was held on July 4. SGI-Hong Kong donated the school in support of an ongoing endeavor known as "Project Hope," which provides assistance to children deprived of educational facilities and opportunities in China. This is the seventh school in China contributed by SGI-Hong Kong.

The idea of building a school in Chaozhou arose when SGI-Hong Kong hosted an exhibition of the works of the acclaimed Chinese scholar Prof. Jao Tsung-i, a native of Chaozhou, at the SGI-Hong Kong Culture Centre in July 2001.

At the ceremony, Professor Jao, quoting educator and first president of the Soka Gakkai, Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, affirmed that education exists for the sake of children's happiness.
