On July 5 and 6, SGI-Indonesia hosted its first Peace Culture Festival at a theater in Jakarta's Taman Mini Park. Approximately 700 SGI members performed for an audience of 2,200. The native people of each region of Indonesia, which encompasses 17,000 islands, have inherited unique and rich cultural traditions, and the performances reflected this diversity: featured were Bali folk dances, a classical Indian dance, an angklung (bamboo musical instrument from West Java) performance, and a dance-drama called "Sendratari" based on Indonesian myth.
Education Minister Malik Fadjar said that he felt the festival served to bridge the hearts of people, severing them from prejudices. He observed that the SGI sets an example by respecting and accepting diversity. Former minister of settlements and regional development Erna Witoelar praised SGI-Indonesia's contributions to society through community activism and events that raise public awareness of environmental issues.
