SGM's Cultural Contributions

Coorganized with the Yin Yang Art Centre, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) hosted "The Beauty of Guqin Performance" at the SGM Grand Culture Center on February 14. The presentation was performed by Prof. Wu Zhao, a researcher in Chinese music history and the president of the Beijing Guqin Research Centre, and two associate performers aged nine and 16. The trio introduced the guqin, a Chinese silk-string zither, before an audience of some 450 people on February 14.

From February 15 to 22, SGM and the Photographic Society of Malaysia collaborated in the exhibition, "The Dead Poplar Diversifolia," which displays nearly 100 photographs by renowned Singapore photographer Teo Bee Yen depicting the plight faced by this desert vegetation of Inner Mongolia.

These presentations are a part of an ongoing series of cultural events held at the culture center since its opening in November 2001. During the last two years, SGM has hosted some 81 cultural activities, including exhibitions, concerts, public lectures and symposiums. Malaysia’s Ministry of Culture, Arts and Tourism presented SGM with the National Arts Award (Anugerah Pendukung Seni) on February 27 for SGM’s outstanding contributions to the arts and culture.
