SSA Outreach Activities

SSA’s fund-raising campaign

The members of Singapore Soka Association (SSA) have played a pivotal role in the island nation’s expression of support for the 40,000 families affected by the devastating earthquake in Bam, Iran, last year. SSA sat on the Advisory Committee for the Iran Appeal of the Singapore Red Cross, which was spearheading and coordinating Singapore’s response to the disaster.

The Iran Appeal, which was comprised of numerous religious and interfaith groups, circulated nationwide a presentation packet which included quotations representing six different religious traditions. One of the quotations was from SGI President Daisaku Ikeda: "When ordinary human beings share the pains and joy of the continuing search for happiness, their acts are compassionate and they reveal the dignity of humanity."

The main event of the 30-day nationwide fund-raising campaign was a Sunday Street Collection where volunteers, including SSA youth division members, collected public donations at five locations. Prior to its participation in the national drive, SSA conducted fund-raising efforts among its own membership, including collections at New Year gatherings, which totaled S$8,604.

The relief effort in Iran was also supported by SGI organizations in other nations, including a one-million-yen donation from the Soka Gakkai in Japan.
