SGI News: Global activities for peace, education and culture

"Seeds of Change"

The "Seeds of Change: The Earth Charter and Human Potential" exhibition created by the SGI and the Earth Charter Initiative for the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development was shown by the Queensland Earth Charter Committee at an interreligious conference at the Edmund Rice Centre in Brisbane, Australia, on April 18 and 19. It was well received by the participants, and during an interfaith celebration, several delegates chose to present panels from the exhibition, rather than specifically religious items, picking them up and carrying to the celebration site.

The Central Asian Regional Ecological Center (CAREC) and the Professional Organization of English Teachers Education Center (POET) of Turkmenistan cohosted a conference on the Earth Charter and Enriching Central Asian Environmental Education in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on April 22 and 24, 2004. Teachers and environmentalists from Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan came together to learn about the Earth Charter and to create a network of teachers to share knowledge and experience and plan for future collaboration. POET shared their new Earth Charter handbook and introduced the SGI-sponsored video A Quiet Revolution and the "Seeds of Change" exhibition.

The conference was held at the Kazakhstan Institute of Management, Economics and Strategic Research, which is one of the leading higher learning institutions in Central Asia. The American Councils for International Education (ACCELS) was a sponsor of the conference.
