At the beginning of July, the central and southern parts of Taiwan were devastated by widespread floods and landslides caused by Typhoon Mindulle. More than 20 people died, many others lost their homes, and half a million households were without electricity or water.
In response, Taiwan Soka Association established an emergency center to coordinate relief efforts and distribute essential items to those in need. In addition, local SGI organizations in affected areas arranged rescue teams to help people affected by the disaster.
Taiwan Soka Association also donated NT$1,000,000 (approximately US$30,000) to the Interior Ministry's Emergency Relief Section.
Floods and mudslides resulting from torrential rains have also devastated Fukui Prefecture in Japan this year. The Soka Gakkai donated emergency funds to Fukui city and several other local communities. Fukui Mayor Tetsuo Sakai said he strongly appreciated the fact that Soka Gakkai volunteers had been among the first to come to the victims' aid.
The Singapore Soka Association is partnering with the humanitarian relief organization Mercy Relief, the Singapore Catholic Archdiocese, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore and the Young Sikh Association in a month-long nationwide fund-raising appeal to raise US $300,000 to aid flood victims in India, Bangladesh, China and Nepal. These funds will support humanitarian relief and rehabilitation operations.
