SGI News: Global activities for peace, education and culture

Education Seminars

SGI-Argentina education department members held their first national forum on September 25 at the SGI-Argentina Culture Center in Buenos Aires on the theme of "Education for Peace." Five experts, including an educational psychologist, held a panel discussion attended by some 180 SGI members and guests.

SGI-Brazil hosted an education seminar on September 11 at the SGI-Brazil Nature and Culture Center. Some 1,300 attended, including principals of Brazilian schools that have implemented the Makiguchi Project, based on the value-creating educational theories of first Soka Gakkai president Tsunesaburo Makiguchi. Participants held group discussions on developments in educational theory.

SGI-Côte d'Ivoire hosted its fourth education seminar on September 18-19 in Abidjan. Some 1,200 attended, including Mr. José-Claude Vila from Côte d'Ivoire's Ministry of National Education. This series of education seminars is based on the belief that education is the driving force for peace-building. Following a lecture by a ministry representative, SGI-Côte d'Ivoire's Gnaka Narcisse introduced the educational philosophy of Mr. Makiguchi and his belief that the purpose of education is children's happiness.
