On October 15-16, the Daisaku Ikeda Research Society at the Center for Japanese Studies, Peking University, China, and the Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP) of Tokyo, Japan, cohosted an international symposium at Peking University on the theme "Perspectives of Oriental Philosophy in the 21st Century." The forum commemorated the 30th anniversary of SGI President Ikeda's first visit to China and his efforts to ease Sino-Japanese tensions.

Mr. Ikeda sent a message in which he affirmed that the light of humanistic wisdom at the heart of Oriental philosophy is capable of transforming hatred and retaliation into compassion and gratitude. He also emphasized the need for a philosophy centered on human beings--one that embraces the concept of harmonious coexistence that has characterized Chinese civilization.

Some 80 Japanese and Chinese scholars from 16 educational institutions addressed various issues facing modern society from the vantage point of the wisdom of the East and traditional Chinese thought.

From October 12 to 13, the Institute of Oriental Philosophy (IOP) and the Institute of World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) cosponsored a third China-Japan symposium in Beijing. Participating scholars held lively discussions on "Modern Civilizations and Interfaith Dialogue."
