Italian Order of Merit

On January 30, the Republic of Italy conferred upon SGI President Daisaku Ikeda the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in the Grade of Grand Officer, the highest award given by the Italian government to a civilian for contributing to Italy through distinguished service or philanthropic and humanitarian activities in various fields, including literature and art. The conferral took place at the official residence of the Italian ambassador to Japan in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

At the conferral, Ambassador Mario Bova congratulated Mr. Ikeda on the award, which recognizes his contributions to the promotion of peace, culture and education founded on the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, as well as SGI-Italy members' multifaceted activities in the areas of human rights, peace, refugee relief and interfaith dialogue in pursuit of solutions to the global issues of today.
