Encountering the Dharma

The University of California Press recently published Hamilton College professor Richard Hughes Seager's study of the Soka Gakkai, Encountering the Dharma: Daisaku Ikeda, Soka Gakkai, and the Globalization of Buddhist Humanism. A review in Publisher's Weekly calls Seager's book an "engaging study" and quotes him as arguing that Soka Gakkai is "best understood as a liberal or modernist movement" that intentionally tries to adapt Buddhism to contemporary society. The review continues, "Peace, culture and education sit at the heart of the movement; adherents understand these as three important ways to express the dharma in a world beset by inequality and injustice."
