More than 1,200 children's storybooks and folk tales from 120 countries and territories were on display at Edmonton City Hall in Canada from October 30 to November 5 in the SGI's "Read Me a Story!" world picture book exhibition.

Mayor Stephen Mandel and other dignitaries donned their Halloween costumes for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, to the delight of the 600 children and other guests present.

Among the highlights of the exhibition are 21 colossal panoramic picture-book panels--2 meters by 3 meters--depicting representative stories through larger-than-life drawings and paintings.

The exhibition, cosponsored by the United Nations Association in Canada Edmonton Branch, the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation for World Peace and SGI-Canada's Edmonton Region, was created in support of UNESCO's mandate to create a culture of peace and nonviolence. Over 3,000 visited the six-day show.

Three children spoke at the opening and read their essays about peace. One said, "The cultures that we the children of the world are raised in are all different, but we all seek for peace."
