Education for Human Rights

The Soka Gakkai in Japan sponsored the exhibition "Human Rights in the 21st Century--Treasuring Each Individual" which opened in Osaka on November 22 and subsequently at the UN Gallery in Tokyo on December 7. The exhibition contributes to the United Nations' World Programme for Human Rights Education. The exhibition is supported by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) Tokyo, the UNICEF Office in Japan, and the National Federation of UNESCO Associations in Japan.

Books included in the exhibition

The exhibition includes artifacts and documents chronicling the struggles of such figures as Helen Keller (1880-1968), who became a pioneering advocate of the rights and dignity of people with disabilities. Another person featured is Janusz Korczak (1879-1942), a Polish children's writer and educator who dedicated his life to protecting Jewish and Catholic orphans and finally accompanied his young Jewish wards to the Nazi death camp Treblinka rather than accept the opportunity to escape.
