"If we are to teach real peace in the world, and if we are to wage a real war against war, we must start with the children." These words of Mahatma Gandhi go to the heart of the exhibition "Building a Culture of Peace for the Children of the World," which opened at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in New Delhi, India, on April 14. These sentiments were quoted by Bharat (India) Soka Gakkai (BSG) General Director Naveena Reddi in her speech at the opening ceremony. Ms. Reddi expressed her hopes that the exhibition would contribute to changing people's mind-set and behavior and help ground them in a culture of peace centered on nonviolence and tolerance.
The SGI organized and created the exhibition, whose crucial message is that each individual can make a difference as a protagonist in the drama of building a culture of peace. Illustrating the impact of individual initiatives, the exhibition highlights the work of 60 people, some famous and others less well known, in building peace, while showcasing the artwork and essays of children.
Launched in August 2003, the exhibition has traveled to various venues in the U.S.A., including the United Nations Headquarters in New York and the U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, D.C., as well as Spain, Switzerland and Canada.
Some 500 people attended the opening in New Delhi, including Dr. Lokesh Chandra, Indian Buddhist scholar and general director of the International Academy of Indian Culture in New Delhi, and United Nations Information Centre Director Shalini Dewan.
