Supporting Nuclear Nonproliferation

The UN building complex in Vienna

On January 17 and February 21, representatives of SGI-Austria participated in meetings of the NGO Committee on Peace, Vienna, to help coordinate NGO activities during the upcoming Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Preparatory Committee (NPT PrepCom) session, to be held from April 30 until May 11 in Vienna this year.

NGO activities around the PrepCom are an important opportunity to intensify the debate at all levels about the issues of nuclear weapons and add weight to the efforts for nuclear nonproliferation.

The 188 governments that have ratified the NPT meet every five years at a Review Conference to assess the implementation of the treaty. The next Review Conference for the NPT will take place in 2010. PrepCom meetings are held annually in the three years prior to the Review Conference.

The NGO Committee on Peace, Vienna, is a forum of UN-accredited NGOs in Vienna. Twenty-five international NGOs are represented.
