On April 14, SGI-Germany and the Institute of Oriental Philosophy European Center cosponsored a public lecture at the Villa Sachsen Culture Center, Bingen, Germany. Some 150 attended the lecture by Professor Horst-Eberhard Richter, a renowned psychoanalyst and peace activist. Professor Richter is director of the Sigmund Freud Institute and an honorary member of the board of the German chapter of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).
In his lecture, "For the Sake of Peace and Culture," Professor Richter spoke about the rapid social progress women have made in the Western world, which has contributed to a rising awareness among women of their value in society. In contrast, many men are experiencing increasing anxiety with the perceived decline of their relative value.
Professor Richter called on the audience to create new values in which men and women work in tandem and bear equal burdens within society. Such efforts are particularly crucial in the home, he said, where husband and wife need to work more effectively in sharing their child-rearing responsibilities, prioritizing children's development and well-being over their own respective self-actualization.
