On October 30, the Indian Federation of United Nations Associations (IFUNA) and Bharat Soka Gakkai (SGI-India) held a seminar to celebrate UN Day at the V. K. Krishna Menon Bhawan in New Delhi, focusing on "Environmental Sustainability: An Essential Tool for Poverty Alleviation."

Justice M. C. Garg of the Delhi High Court stated that Indian laws on the environment are the strongest in the world. Stressing the need for a change in attitudes worldwide, Justice Garg said: "If a person has money and no peace of mind, or vice versa, then peaceful coexistence cannot be achieved. This is why we are continuing to adopt policies based on sustainable development. Development without destruction should be the main concern for all of us."

B. S. Das, a Padma Shri laureate, ambassador and member of Bharat Soka Gakkai, stated: "Global issues cannot be resolved until a composite view is taken. There is no realistic solution other than providing effective support to the UN and working for its revitalization. The role of soft power is the core strength of the UN."

In his message read out on the occasion, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said: "This is a crucial year in the life of our United Nations. We have just passed the midpoint in the struggle to reach the Millennium Development Goals . . . If we want to advance the global common good, we must secure global public goods."

IFUNA Secretary-General Suresh Srivastava commented that UN Day is an occasion to rejoice over what the UN has achieved so far, and develop future plans.
