The exhibition "Lotus Sutra--A Message of Peace and Harmonious Coexistence" was shown in Bangalore, India, from October 16 to 22. The cultural event took place at one of the leading art and culture institutions in Bangalore--the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath.
The exhibition was jointly organized by the Institute of Oriental Philosophy and Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG), supported by the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the International Academy of Indian Culture. The show displays rare manuscripts, microfilms, facsimile editions, romanized texts and panels depicting parables from the Lotus Sutra. During the opening ceremony, a short movie on the Lotus Sutra and the SGI prepared by BSG Bangalore members was also screened.
Showcased during the festive weekend of Diwali, the exhibition attracted over 1,500 visitors from educational and cultural institutions and enthusiasts across the city. The guest of honor, Governor of Karnataka His Excellency Shri Hans Raj Bhardwaj, said: "The Lotus Sutra teaches peaceful coexistence, which is the solution to society's turbulent state today."
Participants included Prof. M. A. Lakshmi Thathachar, noted historian and president of the Samskriti Foundation, who spoke about the wealth of manuscripts in India and lauded the efforts made by the SGI to preserve Buddhist heritage. He urged that more people be trained and taught various scripts to enable preservation of such valuable ancient works, which contain teachings applicable to all people.
