SGI-Chile Youth Discuss Science and Buddhism

SGI-Chile youth members held a seminar on science and Buddhism at the SGI-Chile Culture Center in Santiago on August 29, with astronomer Faviola Molina of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile as a guest speaker.

Professor Molina spoke about the Big Bang theory and important scientific observations made throughout history. She also introduced the similarities between theories of physics and ancient Buddhist beliefs regarding the workings of the universe, such as between the scientific and Buddhist conceptions of the law of cause and effect. Whereas science traditionally accepts a materialistic view of the principle of causality, Buddhism sees cause and effect as not being limited to things and events that can be seen or measured. Rather, Professor Molina noted, it includes unseen or spiritual aspects of life, such as the human experience of various life states, some of which are characterized by happiness, anger, cruelty or kindness.
